Our School Activities

Soft Opening

Labo School is created to prove that Cambodian teachers can create classrooms where no one is left behind. Approximately 60 students from grades 4-6 at nearby public elementary schools attend only in the afternoons (+ mothers who had dropped out of elementary school and worked as craftspeople learn alongside them. Students persistently tackling difficult problems in Khmer, math, art, and ethics for 45 minutes without giving up.

Start with how children can learn

"I used to stick to my own methods, but since I started observing students closely and thinking about how they could learn more easily, I have seen the children learning safely and growing. The classroom atmosphere has changed, and I've also gained great confidence."

Every child, without exception, can learn

"After observing the students in our school for the past few months, I am convinced that every child, without exception, will learn and grow if given time. While there are many challenges, I want the students to believe in the change and follow us.

From 'waiting for the answer' to 'self-exploration'

"Children who only waited for the answer have changed to trying to explore their own thoughts as they repeatedly experience being asked for their opinions. Seeing this spread of initiative and confidence has given me courage, and I've started thinking about my own opinions based on the students' learning."

The teacher also learns with the child

"In the past, because I 'only taught,' students sometimes didn't fully understand. Now, by deeply understanding the subject, considering how students learn, and incorporating activities using hands and experiments, and by continuing to learn alongside the children myself, the lessons are gradually becoming ones where we can learn together."

Colleagues' support builds confidence

"I used to have great anxiety about teaching, but as I was encouraged by colleagues and learned together, I gradually became more at ease. When I became calm enough to face the lesson, I felt that the students also learned safely, and smiles spread in the classroom."

Listen to the voice of the child's heart

"I used to not fully understand the children and felt they were passive in learning. But as I continued to observe, I realized that the children were actually trying their best and seeking support from the teacher. When I changed how I faced them, the students' attitudes also changed, and I feel I can create a safer learning environment."

Voice from student in grade 6

I used to struggle with reading and writing Khmer, but at SALASUSU I practiced reading and writing, and now I can read many things and express myself in writing on my own.

Voice from student in grade 6

SALASUSU teachers always care about us. They never get angry when we make mistakes and always help when we don’t understand, so we can study safely and enjoyably. I want to learn more about Khmer language and math.
